Wednesday June 09, 2004 Well, the weather finally caught up with us. Actually, I ran into it, head first. I was walking along in Kendallville, IN minding my own business after visiting the Windmill Museum of the Mid-West. It was really hot. I stopped at what looked like the last store before leaving Kendallville. Drank a lot of liquids, ate a shushie and covered myself from head to ankle with sunscreen. Then I walked about 30 minutes in the sun and clouds came rolling in faster than, well, greased lightening. In about 15 minutes it went from blistering sun to pelting, near hailstone, rain. Then came the lightening. I looked around. Other than the telephone poles, I was the tallest thing around. I put in a very quick call to Travis, who was about five miles to the east and had trouble believing it was raining. They say that's not at all unusual here. The storms come quick, then they're gone. Thursday June 10, 2004 We visited (by car) Shipshewana, one of the many Amish communities in the area. Spent some tiime at Menno-Hof the Amish-Mennonite Visitors Center. It was a great experience. I now know a lot more about Mennonites, Hutterites and Amish than I did before. Of course, I knew just about nothing before. In a few days we'll be at Amish Acres, which is right on Route 6. Should be interesting. Our plan is to be through Gary next Wednesday, then take some time off when friends and family visit later next week. |
