Adair, Iowa to Atlantic. Phew. Hot one today. Started out flat, then turned very hilly. Why are the uphills always longer than the down hills. Just like life. My shirt was soaked (with sweat) by the time I had walked 15 minutes - and that was in the early morning. When I reached Atlantic, I saw a time/temp sign that said 100 degrees. I'm told that was probably five degrees higher than the actual temperature. HIGHER? I think it was 20-degrees lower. Well, that's the way it felt. And the truth is that folks around here say you should add about 10 degrees hotter out in the fields than in city. That makes sense, the temperature is in the shade and there wasn't a lick of shade most of the walk route. I'm told it's going to be just as hot and maybe more hilly tomorrow. Anyone care to join me? On the plus side. We're staying at the S.F Martin House in Atlantic, a restaurant in a Victorian house that doubles as a bed and breakfast, although the owner is still working on the rooms. The owner, Roger Steffens, made dinner for us Monday and it was terrific. One of the best salads I've ever had. I'd certainly pay to eat here. Fortunately, I didn't have to. Thank you Roger. |
