Tuesday November 30, 2004 Glendale, CA to South LA 9,950,000 footsteps down. 50,000 to go. Unfortunately it doesn't get any easier, just because you're close. So I'll keep trudging along, constantly amazed at how polite these LA drivers are to pedestrians and how the pedestrians are so observant of the lights and crosswalks. Being new to all this I still dart out into the street against the light sometimes. Then a car comes swinging around the corner and stops dead! No honking. No crude gestures. No "get out of the way you jerk!" Sometimes I signal them to go ahead. But they don't move. They're waiting for me to get across safely. Frankly I think the drivers are startled and assume there must have been a walk light if there's a pedestrain in the road. But it is a nice thing. We're in South LA about 20 miles from Long Beach. I think we might make it. |
